BYRON BAY NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY

Those tiny little toes, fingers & those occasional smiles, these tiny but precious moments are worth capturing.

They say that time is the biggest thief and that could not be more true when it comes to how quickly our babies grow!

“The best part about being a newborn photographer, is that I get the honour to document these first moments. I know how daunting it can be when your new baby arrives, time goes out the window and sometimes your running in survival mode. However it’s important to stop and enjoy each moment, and why not capture you in this moment in time with beautiful family & newborn photography.”

Kylie talks lighting, locations & capturing the love

October 2023

Lighting is what makes or breaks a photograph more than anything else. Even if you have the most breathtaking landscape or stunning model, you can still end up with a flat, dull, and uninspiring photo without the right lighting.

With outdoor photography you have to completely rely on natural light to illuminate your subject. Because of this, choosing the right time of day is very important when shooting outdoor scenes. Since the invention of the first camera, amateur and professional photographers have been thinking about this problem and have found the perfect solution – the golden hour.

Golden hour or “magic hour” is roughly the first hour of light after sunrise, and the last hour of light before sunset, although the exact duration varies from season to season. As the sun is low in the sky during these times, soft, diffused light is available, which is much more flattering than the harsh midday sun.

As a result, this type of light produces less contrast, which reduces the chance of losing parts of your subject in strong shadows or blown-out highlights. A warm glow adds a pleasing feel to the scene, and long shadows add texture and depth by highlighting details. Another additional benefit is that there are generally fewer people around at dawn and dusk than at other times of the day, giving us a chance to capture your images in relative peace.

Byron Bay Photographer Kylie’s Golden Hour Image Gallery

My favorite local locations for shooting the golden hour include Lake Ainsworth & Broken Head Beach, both locations are just south of Byron Bay. I prefer to shoot during the sunset golden hour over the sunrise golden hour, on the East Coast of Australia the sun comes up over the ocean, and shooting on the beach into the direct sun can produce strong silhouette imagery with not a lot of detail, I love to shoot using the setting light as there’s usually some foliage or trees to filter the light which allows for beautiful golden imagery with most of the detail retained.

Lake Ainsworth is my all-time favorite sunset location; it is usually well protected from the wind which can be a stark contrast and a nice retreat from shooting on the beach just meters away. I love shooting through the paperbark trees, they offer a beautiful natural prop if my clients choose to sit on the branches or lean back on the trees, I find that there is something so mystical and enchanting about the paperbark trees, ancient aboriginals used the bark for funeral ceremonies and spiritual occasions. The bark is known to have natural magical and spiritual properties and has been used to scribe spells or to create a wish.  In addition to shooting amongst the paperbark trees on some of my photoshoots (in particular pregnancy/maternity shoots) I will jump in the water with my client and get some golden hour water photography. The way the water in Lake Ainsworth turns to liquid gold is one of my favorite things to shoot.

In addition to the golden hour, I do love to shoot during the blue hour. What’s the blue hour? you may ask, it’s that short timeframe just before sunrise or when the sun has just gone down. This whimsical window of time is when a gentle blue light fills the sky, creating a cool, calm, and peaceful setting.

I love the variety and excitement that outdoor photography provides, no two days are the same and you really have to think on your feet and work with the weather and light that’s available at the time. Outdoor photography has made me more in-tune with the weather, I know exactly when the sun rises and sets, when the tide is high or low, and what the weather patterns are doing. As someone who has always loved being out in nature, basing my business around the ebbs and flows of nature makes me feel so aligned with my passions and the natural world around me.

Byron Bay Photographer Kylie’s take on capturing real, authentic imagery

I love witnessing love, capturing it, and looking back on it is the reason why I do what I do. It raises my vibration and gives me the warm fuzzies. I feel honoured and blessed to be the visual storyteller of real-life experiences and emotions. To be invited along to capture these special moments in people’s lives I hold in very high regard.
